Creating a winter sanctuary for wildlife.

01/02/2019
At the end of the summer when I had finished trimming out the scrub from the rides I decided rather than burn the wood I would leave it in a pile as a winter sanctuary for the wildlife.
This is probably more important now than ever, especially following the disastrous news that the worlds insect population is crashing at an alarming rate. Insects being essential for pollination and part of the food chain for so many species.

Ok I know my wood pile is a bit extreme, but in the scheme of things its only occupying a small space in the 20 acres here. Everyone can however do their bit by leaving some fallen wood in the corner somewhere or even building a dedicated insect home. I have also converted a few redundant bee hives but I suspect the wood pile will get much more use and probably provide safe nesting areas in the spring
